Acknowledgement of Sources

UK Jewish population data, for England and Wales is acknowledged, as Source: National Statistics website www.statistics.gov.uk. Crown Copyright material is reproduced with the permission of the Controller of HMSO. For Scotland, see the General Register Office for Scotland website; and for Northern Ireland, see the Northern Ireland Statistics and Research Agency website.

Estimates of the global Jewish population are taken from David Barrett and George Kurian, World Christian Encylopaedia: Survey of Churches and Religions (Oxford: Oxford University Press, 2nd edition, 2000).

Estimates of numbers of Jewish organisations and places of worship are taken from P. Weller (ed.), Religions in the UK: A Directory, 2001-3 (Derby: Multi-Faith Centre at the University of Derby, 2001). The section on a ‘A Short Introduction to Judaism’ summarises and abstracts from the same publication’s chapter on ‘Introducing Jews in the UK’ (pp. 375-390) which was developed with input from a range of consultants (pp. 643-650).

It should, however, be noted that it is known that these represent fewer Jewish organisations and synagogues than actually exist. The Jewish Yearbook gives more comprehensive details of Jewish organisations.

Materials in the sections on ‘Jews in the UK: Key Information’ and ‘Jewish Origins: Key Developments in the UK’ were originally developed by the author for the British Council and used here by kind permission.
