| During the repression of the 1930s, an off-shoot of the Stalinist purges
in the Soviet Union, more than 20,000 monks were killed and over 800 temples
and monasteries destroyed in Mongolia. In 1990 all barriers to religion
were removed since when 160 monasteries and nunneries have been re-opened.
The photographs show the lay people returning to worship without any obstruction,
the education of young nuns and monks and the construction of new monasteries.
Barbara's intimate images convey various aspects of contemporary Mongolian
Buddhism that remain largely unknown outside the region. Additionally,
