UK Hindu population data is acknowledged, for England and Wales, as Source: National Statistics website www.statistics.gov.uk. Crown Copyright material is reproduced with the permission of the Controller of HMSO. For Scotland, see the General Register Office for Scotland website; and for Northern Ireland, see the Northern Ireland Statistics and Research Agency website. Estimates of the global Hindu population are taken from David Barrett and George Kurian, World Christian Encylopaedia: Survey of Churches and Religions (Oxford: Oxford University Press, 2nd edition, 2000).

Estimates of numbers of Hindu organisations and places of worship are taken from P. Weller (ed.), Religions in the UK: A Directory 2001-3 Derby: Multi-Faith Centre at the University of Derby, 2001). The section on a ‘A Short Introduction to Hinduism’ summarises and abstracts from the same publication’s chapter on ‘Introducing Hindus in the UK’ (pp. 297-316) which was developed with input from a range of consultants (pp. 643-650).

Materials in the sections on ‘Hindus in the UK: Key Information’ and ‘Hindu Origins: Key Developments in the UK’ were originally developed by the author for the British Council and used here by kind permission.
